The Daegu Airport ( Korean 대구 국제 공항 ) is an international airport and base of the South Korean Air Force about five kilometers east-northeast of the city of Daegu in the province of Gyeongsangbuk-do in South Korea . The airport is mainly used for domestic flights, but there are also connections to various destinations in China , Japan and Taiwan . The South Korean Air Force has the 11th Fighter Wing stationed here, the three flying squadrons are equipped with the McDonnell Douglas F- 15K. Daegu has been connected to the KTX high-speed network since 2004, which is why the number of passengers has halved between 2003 and 2013.
history
At the site of today's airport, an airfield was built during the Japanese occupation , which was taken over by the American armed forces after the end of the Second World War and was named "K2". After the attack by communist North Korea , the airfield was cleared during the battle for Taegu . During the landing at Incheon and the outbreak of the Allied forces from the bridgehead of Busan , the airfield was returned to service and repaired by the 822nd Engineer Aviation Battalion, covered with steel mesh and be extended to 1,700 meters. In May 1951, work began on removing the steel mats and building a concrete runway. In April 1961, the first civilian flights with DC-3 planes started to Seoul. International scheduled operations began in 1996: Korean Air started flying to Osaka from February . A new terminal building was erected in 2001 and the freight terminal and the new airport hotel went into operation one year later.
