The Irkutsk airport ( Russian Аэропорт Иркутск ) is the international airport of the Russian city of Irkutsk . It is located about 4 km east of the center on the outskirts of Irkutsk.

The modernization of the airport's domestic terminal was completed on April 10, 2009.

history

The international terminal

The history of the airport began in June 1925 with the stopover of several aircraft on the way from Moscow to Beijing . In 1928 the first mail and passenger flights were started from Irkutsk. In 1932, flights from Moscow via Irkutsk to Vladivostok were taken up. In 1954 the airport was given the status of an international airport. In 1956 the first Tu-104 passenger jet landed . From 1975 Tu-154 aircraft were handled at Irkutsk Airport . In 1992 the airport and the airline operating from Irkutsk were separated organizationally. The airport has been approved for Category 1 landings since 2004. In 2005 an agreement was reached between the airports of Irkutsk, Munich , Ulaanbaatar and Shenyang for cooperation in transit traffic between Europe and Asia . In 2007, Irkutsk Airport handled more than 1 million passengers.

Further development

The construction of a new airport 25 km northwest of Irkutsk near the town of Posnjakowo ( Russian Позняково ) is still being discussed . Construction of the new airport was scheduled to start in 2010 and the airport should go into operation in 2015 [obsolete] . The responsible state authority FGU Glawgosekspertisa ( Russian ФГУ “Главгосэкспертиза” ) has so far rejected the construction of the plant at this location due to topographical, climatic (heavy fog) and financial concerns.

Incidents

  • On January 3, 1994, a Tupolev Tu-154 of Baikal Air ( aircraft registration number RA-85656 ) crashed shortly after taking off from Irkutsk airport in the direction of Moscow because of engine and hydraulic problems , after which it had lost control. All 124 people on board and one on the ground died (see also Baikal Airlines flight 130 ) .
  • On July 4, 2001, a Tu-154 of Vladivostok Avia , flight XF 352, crashed while approaching. It crashed about 30 kilometers from the airport on the third attempt to land. The machine was on its way from Yekaterinburg to Vladivostok and was supposed to stop for a scheduled refueling stop. All 145 people on board were killed.
  • On July 9, 2006, an Airbus A310-300 of S7 Airlines (F-OGYP) launched in Moscow at Irkutsk Airport came off the runway at high speed when it landed, hit a concrete wall and into a building, where it caught fire rose. 125 of the total of 203 inmates were killed. The trigger was a previously defective thrust reversal and a completely uncoordinated approach by the pilots, which resulted in renewed forward thrust of the other engine, retraction of the braking spoilers on the wings and deactivation of the automatic braking system.
