The Matsu Beigan airport ( Chinese  馬祖北竿機場 , pinyin Mǎzǔ Beigan Jīchǎng ) is a small regional airport on the island of Beigan , to the of the Republic of China managed Matsu Islands belongs.

history

There used to be a military airfield on the site of today's airport. After the military administration of the Matsu Islands in the sign of détente with the People's Republic of China was lifted, the Matsu Islands increasingly developed into a tourist destination. On January 17, 1994, after extensive renovations and extensions, a commercially operated airport was opened. Due to the difficult topography and the changeable weather conditions in Formosastraße , however, the airport could only be approached in visual flight , which often meant that the air traffic had to be diverted due to poor visibility. This is especially the case in the months of March to May, when fog has to be expected more often.

In January 2003, the Taiwanese civil aviation authority therefore decided to build a second airport ( Matsu Nangan Airport ) on the neighboring island of Nangan . This subsequently led to a decrease in the number of passengers in Matsu Beigan.

Facilities

The airport has a runway measuring 1150 × 30 meters, two parking positions for aircraft the size of a De Havilland DHC-8 and one for helicopters the size of a Bell 412 . The airport area covers an area of 253,870 m² (25.3 hectares ). Due to their small dimensions, no larger passenger jets have been able to take off and land , only smaller turboprop aircraft of the 56-seat Dash 8 type. On average there are around five to six flight movements per day. A new airport terminal was opened on January 28, 2005. The airport terminal building covers an area of 1365.65 m².

Airlines and flight connections

The airport is currently only served by the airline Uni Air . The only flight destination for scheduled flights is Taipei Songshan Airport . The authorities on the Matsu Islands have been trying for a long time to expand the two airports in order to attract larger tourist flows to the islands.

Incidents

  • On April 5, 1996, a Dornier 228-212 of Formosa Airlines ( Formosa Airlines flight 7613 ) crashed into the sea about 1.6 km from the airport after the pilot had missed the runway in poor visibility. 6 of the 17 aircraft occupants were killed. The accident was classified as a " Controlled Flight Into Terrain " ( CFIT).
  • On August 10, 1997, a Dornier 228-212 ( Formosa Airlines flight 7601 ) had an accident while approaching Matsu Beigan Airport after it had struck tree tops and a building. The pilots had previously canceled their first landing approach in strong wind and rain. All sixteen people on board were killed. The accident was classified as a CFIT.
  • On March 25, 2016, a Hawker 400 XP charter aircraft that had taken off from Kinmen with the destination Matsu Nangan airport erroneously landed at the wrong airport ( non-authorized airport ) on the neighboring island of Beigan. People were not harmed. The incident was classified as "serious" by the Taiwanese Aviation Authority.
