The Pärnu Airport ( Estonian : Pärnu Lennujaam ) is a civilian airport in Estonia . It is located 4 km from the city of Pärnu in the municipality of Tori .
history
In October 1937 the Pärnu City Council made available 0.28 km² for the construction of an airport. During the Soviet occupation of Estonia, the airport served as the home base of Soviet interceptors .
In the summer of 1992 the Red Army left Pärnu. The airport was transferred to the Estonian Ministry of Defense. In October of the same year, the conversion into a civil airport began on the site. The Tallinn Airport Company AS Tallinna Lennujaam has been operating Pärnu Airport since 2005 .
The German company FLN Frisia-Luftverkehr flew regularly from Pärnu to the islands of Kihnu and Ruhnu during the winter months . In 2019 the route to Ruhnu was re-tendered. The tender was won by the Estonian airline Diamond-Sky OÜ, which took over the flights from winter 2019/2020. Regular flights to Kihnu are no longer carried out since a new (more powerful) ferry was used there, which can maintain the route to the island in winter even when the Baltic Sea is medium icy. In addition, Pärnu Airport serves numerous private planes. In 2005, the airport recorded 4,774 passengers and 1,009 passengers in 2019.
According to information on the airport's website, the airport will be closed from May 1, 2020 to June 2021 for reconstruction work. On the one hand, the ailing runway will be renovated. On the other hand, reports were made on site about the new construction of a more modern passenger terminal, which is intended to replace the aging old building. After its completion, it is hoped that the city will be linked by line carriers or low-cost airlines.
