The Kärdla Airport ( Estonian : Kärdla Lennujaam ) is an airport in Estonia . The airport is located seven kilometers east of the town of Kärdla near the village of Hiiessaare in the rural municipality of Hiiumaa , on the north coast of the second largest island of Estonia Hiiumaa .
The nearest commercial airports are Kuressaare (87 km), Tallinn (125 km), Turku ( Finland , 172 km), Helsinki-Vantaa (Finland, 192 km) and Mariehamn ( Åland , 207 km).
history
Kärdla Airport was built in 1963. From the 1960s to the 1980s there were regular connections to Tallinn, Haapsalu , Vormsi , Kuressaare, Riga , Pärnu , Viljandi and Tartu . Murmansk , Vilnius , Kaunas and Riga were also served with charter connections. The number of passengers in 1987 was 24,335. The number of passengers has decreased since 1992, so in 1995 only 727 passengers used the airport. This was because the airline Aeroflot was in crisis and Estonia's economy was restructured after independence. In 1998 the runway was renewed and the number of passengers rose again, so that in 2004 8840 passengers were counted.
On November 23, 2001 an Antonov An-28 of the Estonian airline ELK Airways with 17 people on board had an accident on the way from Tallinn to Kärdla. During the approach, the machine crashed into a piece of forest in the Soera Agricultural Museum near Palade on the island of Hiiumaa, 1.5 kilometers from Kärdla Airport. Two people did not survive the crash.
use
For several years now, the airport has been used for passenger and cargo flights around the clock. In 2017, the Estonian capital Tallinn will be served twice a day from Monday to Friday, and once a day on the weekend.
The Estonian Air Force and the Coast Guard also use Kärdla Airport.
An annual air show takes place in the first weekend in August.
