history
The airport's first runway was built in the second half of the 1930s. On March 6, 1945, regular air traffic to Tallinn began. The airport played an important role in winter when shipping connections to the mainland were suspended. It was important for the island's fishing industry because it enabled the catch to be flown directly to target markets, such as Moscow . From 1958 the airport was electrified.
