The Kuressaare Airport ( Estonian : Kuressaare Lennujaam ) is an airport in Estonia . The airport is located on the largest island in Estonia, Saaremaa . It is located in the Roomassaare district , three kilometers southeast of the center of Kuressaare .

There are flight connections (even if not all year round) to the island of Ruhnu as well as to Tallinn, Riga , Helsinki and Stockholm .

The nearest commercial airports are Kärdla (87 km), Riga ( Latvia , 168 km), Tallinn (189 km), Tartu (245 km) and Visby ( Sweden , 252 km).

history

The airport's first runway was built in the second half of the 1930s. On March 6, 1945, regular air traffic to Tallinn began. The airport played an important role in winter when shipping connections to the mainland were suspended. It was important for the island's fishing industry because it enabled the catch to be flown directly to target markets, such as Moscow . From 1958 the airport was electrified.
