The Plymouth Airport ( IATA : PLH , ICAO : EGHD ; Engl. : Plymouth City Airport ) was a regional airport in Plymouth in southwest England .

history

The history of aviation in Plymouth goes back to 1923. That was the first time passengers - who had boarded a mail flight - were transported in the region. This first and successful flight raised the question of a permanent airfield. Finally, Plymouth Airport was opened by the Prince of Wales in July 1931. The airport is now owned by Sutton Harbor Holdings , which also owns Air Southwest .

In August 2009, the shorter of the two runways was permanently closed. It is planned to rebuild parts of their usable area with commercial and residential buildings.

In February 2011, the most frequented route to Gatwick near London in terms of passenger numbers was discontinued for economic reasons. On December 23, 2011, operations were finally completely stopped and the airport closed.

Location and transport links

The airport is located about 3 km north of Plymouth city center in the Derriford district and has only road access . No buses stop at the airport itself, but there are stops for lines 28 and 29 ( Plymouth Citybus ) and 83 and 84 ( First ) within a few minutes' walk.

Airlines and Destinations

The airport recently had no more scheduled connections. Air Southwest recently operated flights to Aberdeen , Bristol , Glasgow , Guernsey , Jersey , Leeds and Manchester , but relocated them to Newquay Cornwall Airport on July 28, 2011 .
