The Aérodrome de Belfort-Chaux is an airfield of the general aviation and is in the Region Bourgogne Franche-Comté in the department Territoire de Belfort mainly in the field of Chaux and Sermamagny about seven kilometers north of Belfort . The airfield was built as a military airfield during the First World War .
history
Aviation in Belfort began on August 22, 1912, when a military aviation center was established on the Marsfeld near Lake Forges ( étang des Forges ). The aircraft stationed here were relocated to Fontaine-lès-Luxeuil in February 1916 , beyond the range of German artillery, in the hinterland of the Vosges front.
Today's airfield was built far outside the city during the First World War in 1917 in the immediate vicinity of the border with Germany and the course of the front. A number of different French aviation units were stationed in Belfort, including the Escadrille SPA 315 .
After the war, 122 of the 175 hectares were returned to the previous owners in 1920 , while the remaining 53 hectares were converted into the civil airfield that still exists today.
Todays use
Today the airfield is used by various aviation clubs. In addition to powered pilots, it is used by gliders, ultralight and model airplanes as well as balloonists. The northern part houses the " Louis Blériot " flying club and a gliding school.
