The women's football department of Fluminense Rio de Janeiro (officially: Fluminense Football Club ) was founded in 1995 and reopened in 2018 after a break of several years.

history

A soccer section for women was first established by Fluminense in 1995. A key initiator is said to have been the then eighteen-year-old Susana Werner, who, in addition to her career as a photo model and TV presenter, was also briefly active as a player. She has been married to former national goalkeeper Júlio César since 2002 . At the turn of the millennium, the club competed several times in the Carioca state championship for women , but then limited its activities to the junior area. In July 2011, the youth teams were disbanded for cost reasons in protest of the players and their relatives.

The establishment of a professionally run football section for women was started by Fluminense in late 2018 in order to fulfill the criteria of the continental association CONMEBOL for participation in the Copa Libertadores , which will apply from 2019 , according to which the participating clubs now require the maintenance of a corresponding section. In addition to an A-team, the club also intends to set up appropriate departments and junior teams to promote young talent. To this end, the club entered into a partnership with the Duque de Caxias- based talent promotion group “Daminhas da Bola”, whose players made up the core of the new squad. The founder of this group, Thaissan Santos Passos, once emerged from the youth of Fluminense and has now been appointed first head coach.

For the 2019 premiere season, Fluminense was able to enter the second division of the Brazilian women's championship ( Série-A2 2019 ). The first mandatory league game was played on March 30, 2019 in the Estádio das Laranjeiras, the club's oldest venue. The CRESSPOM team from the Federal District was defeated 2-1. The first goal for Fluminense came from Tarciane Karen dos Sanots de Lima.
