Fluspirilen is a drug that is used to treat schizophrenia . It is a highly effective neuroleptic from the group of diphenylbutylpiperidines .

The prescription medication is in Germany under the brand name Imap ® (an abbreviation for I ntra m uskuläres A NTI P sychotikum) and Fluspi ® and fluspirilene beta ® marketed. If the relevant indication is present (acute productive and chronic schizophrenic psychoses (long-term therapy and relapse prevention)), i. m. be injected.

In a study from 1997, fluspiril was shown to be the second most common cause of tardive dyskinesia after haloperidol . Just a few applications can be enough to trigger dyskinesias. This is another reason why it is warned against its use in the treatment of depression .
