Foley is an American city ​​in Baldwin County , Alabama . The 2000 United States census found a population of 7,950. Foley has an area of ​​37 km 2 . Thus the population density of Foley was 214 people / km 2 . It has now more than doubled.

Demographics

At the 2000 census, Foley had 7,950 inhabitants, 3,126 households, and 2106 families. 74.49% of the population were white and 21.86% were African American. 23.1% of Foley's residents were under 18 years old and 21.7% over 65 years of age. The median income per household was $ 31,596.

history

Foley was founded by John B. Foley of Chicago , who in 1901 on the way to the funeral of William McKinley met a railroad agent who reported to him about the area of ​​Baldwin County. In 1902 he bought a large area of ​​land to settle citizens there. He used his own money to build a railroad from Bay Minette to Foley. In 1905 the first train station was built in Foley, but it burned down in 1908. It was rebuilt the following year. Today the old train station serves as a city museum. Mr. Foley donated several lots for schools and churches.

One site in the village is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of June 30, 2019, the Foley Downtown Historic District .

Surroundings

To the north of Foley are Summerdale (9 km) and Robertsdale (17 km). To the northwest are Silverhill (17 km) and Point Clear (24 km). To the east lies Elberta (8 km) and to the south Gulf Shores (15 km) and Orange Beach . The Gulf of Mexico is 12 km to the west, and County Seat Bay Minette is 53 km to the north. The Northwest Florida Border is 12 miles away.
