The Forêt refuge du Lac-Matapédia is a forest area placed under protection on April 2, 2008 in the eastern part of the Canadian province of Québec , in which three populations of an orchid species ( Calypso bulbosa ) are found, which are considered endangered in the province. The area represents the northern Appalachian ecoregion.
The name of the reserve refers to a lake, Lac Matapédia , from which three rivers arise, including the Matapédia . Its name goes back to a name of the Mi'kmaq, it means river that divides into several arms .
geography
The forest is located on the south side of the Saint Lawrence River in the Matapédia Valley 400 km northeast of Québec , 14 km northwest of Amqui . This area is in the Regional County Parish of La Matapédia . The forest itself dominates two areas of approximately the same size on both sides of Cap Pioui, a hilly landscape in the north-west of Lac Matapédia, which rises between 160 and 230 m above sea level. Of the watercourses in the reserve, only one brook bears a name, namely the Ruisseau de la Baie-à-Zénon.
The subsoil consists of sedimentary rock ( slate , sandstone , limestone and conglomerate ). These sediments date from the Cambrian and Ordovician and have been dated to an age of 525 to 448 million years.
flora
The dominant tree species is the Occidental Tree of Life (French: Thuya occidental), whose populations in French-speaking North America are known as "cédrières", accompanied by balsam firs and , to a lesser extent, black spruce . It is one of the last sites of its kind on the lower St. Lawrence.
