Amqui is a city in the Canadian province of Quebec .
It was founded in 1848 and in 2006 had 6,261 inhabitants. Amqui is located in the valley of the Rivière Matapédia below the Lac Matapédia to the west in the northern Appalachians . The city belongs to the regional county municipality of La Matapédia .
The Route 132 leads east-west direction through Amqui; there is also a train station. Amqui is the hometown of goalkeeper Sébastien Caron , who was formerly in the National Hockey League and later in the German Ice Hockey League .

Amqui is located on the south side of the St. Lawrence River , about 416 km northeast of the provincial capital Québec and 320 km west of Gaspé . The more important cities in the vicinity are Rimouski 94 km away , Mont-Joli 74 km further west , Matane (64 km north of Amqui) and Sayabec 30 km further east .
