Formosa is a city in northern Argentina , located on the right bank of the Río Paraguay , which forms the border between Argentina and Paraguay. It is the capital of the province of Formosa with the same name and has 198,074 inhabitants.
Formosa has been the seat of the Diocese of Formosa since 1957 and the seat of the Universidad Nacional de Formosa (UNaF) since 1988 , which emerged from a campus of the Universidad Nacional del Nordeste founded in 1977 .
To the southwest of the city, seven kilometers away, is the “El Pucú Airport” ( IATA : FMA, ICAO : SARF), which is mainly used for charter flights and domestic scheduled flights.
history
The region was originally populated by Toba and Wichí (Matacos). The city was founded on April 8, 1879 by Luis Jorge Fontana . The founder's remains rest in the city's cathedral . The name of the city and the province are derived from the old Spanish word fermosa (today: hermosa = beautiful). Spanish sailors in search of the Sierra de Plata (Silver Mountains) called the bend of the Río Paraguay , on which today's Formosa lies, Vuelta Fermosa or Vuelta la Formosa .
economy
