The Forum Zeitgenössischer Musik Leipzig is a non-profit association based in Leipzig and an independent cultural organization for the project-based communication of contemporary music.

general description

The naming Forum Contemporary Music Leipzig [FZML] highlights the basic orientation and objectives of the FZML e. V. emerged. Originally the aim of the association was to promote contemporary music in and around Leipzig. Since the mid-1990s, increasingly cross-border projects have been added to these local activities, for example within the framework of GRENZREGIONEN / LINE_IN: LINE_OUT, Heimat Moderne, Experimental 1 and the CAGE100 Festival. The mention of the place Leipzig in the name therefore refers more to the seat and the central office facilities of the association than to the geographical limitation of its activities.

Since it was founded, the association has taken on a mediating position between contemporary music and the composer on the one hand and the institutions of public musical life and the public on the other. He has a range of different communication methods at his disposal, from general, informative concert introductions to educational projects and including the audience in aesthetic debates. This results in an open mediator position, which is expressed in the word “forum”. In relation to stylistic and aesthetic selection criteria, as implied by the terms “modern music”, “avant-garde music” or “new music”, the association takes a neutral position with its name. The association's work focuses on the music of the 20th and 21st centuries in the selection of works and the conception of projects. The term “contemporary music” is therefore understood as a historiographical and not as a stylistic-aesthetic category.

Origin and development

The FZML was founded on November 8, 1990 by members of the important ensemble for avant-garde music in the GDR , the Hanns Eisler group for new music, and various artists, authors, scientists and journalists. The founding members include Günter Neubert , Eberhardt Klemm , Josef Christof , Burkhard Glaetzner , Reiner Kontressowitz , Karl Ottomar Treibmann , Steffen Schleiermacher , Dieter Zahn , Gerhard Erber , Gerd Schenker , Matthias Sannemüller , Wolfgang Weber and Axel Schmidt . The common goal was to spread contemporary music and promote a lively dialogue about contemporary music and art. Just two years later, in 1992, the FZML found itself in an initial crisis situation. Various interests within the association's board, as well as the fact that the individual members advanced their own musical careers individually and in some cases extremely successfully, led to the decision to dissolve the association on December 12, 1992. Since the resolution was not implemented, the FZML continued to exist.

In 1993, Gerd Schenker , Matthias Sannemüller and Axel Andrae replaced the FZML board that had been in place to date. The concert series »MUSIK-ZEIT« initiated by her became the first successful format of the FZML. In addition to numerous world premieres, the focus of the program was on the international music scene in particular at the concerts, which initially took place in the New Town Hall and later in the Old Trade Exchange. With the »School Music Concerts«, this board also created the first series of events that focused on conveying contemporary music to the next generation.

In 1999 Schenker and Sannemüller handed over the artistic direction to Thomas Christoph Heyde . A year later, the FZML moved into its first official business premises under his leadership. From 2001 the FZML organized a festival in addition to several concert series. This constancy strengthened the perception of the association enormously and the FZML established itself more and more in the cultural scene. The city of Leipzig and the state of Saxony now regularly support FZML projects. In 2003, federal funds also flowed for the first time. In 2006 the festival series "MachtMusik" started, in 2007 the successful concert series "FreiZeitArbeit". For the next few years, these projects formed the core of the work of the FZML. In 2008 and 2009, the FZML became increasingly involved in education and carried out projects in schools and social hot spots. In 2010 the FZML celebrated its 20th anniversary. In the same year the association "Friends and Patrons of the FZML" was founded, whose members support the FZML financially and ideally in its work.

With the annual international festival CAGE100, which consists of over 100 individual events worldwide, the FZML 2012/2013 is carrying out the most extensive project of its existence to date.

Working method

As a non-profit association, the FZML is characterized by a special operational structure. Since every project brings with it new and usually individual tasks, the association continuously develops its working methods in order to be able to meet the requirements of the respective project appropriately. In contrast to the structure of conventional institutions, the association also calls this process "spontaneous institutionalization", which emphasizes the importance of flexibility and adaptability for the association's work.

financing

The Forum for Contemporary Music Leipzig has received institutional funding from the City of Leipzig since 2011. The association generates all additional funds for projects through the acquisition of third-party funding from foundations and cultural funds, through private donors and donations, as well as through the support of the friends and supporters of the FZML . The FZML has received top-level funding from the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony, the Federal Cultural Foundation and the BMFSFJ (Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth).

Conception

The work of the FZML is conceptually based on a connection between different levels of viewing contemporary music. The focus is on bridging the distance between sensual experience and intellectual processing . The guiding principle is that contemporary music can be both an object of perception and an object of discourse. The spectrum of methods by means of which the phenomenon of contemporary music is illuminated in different ways ranges from the classical concert format to experimenting with performance modalities and the inclusion of other art genres up to the active participation of the audience in artistic processes. All methods form a dramaturgical unit, the focus of which is the consideration of the respective work or topic.

The MachtMusik festival series can be seen as an example of this special dramaturgical concept. It was realized once a year between 2006 and 2009 with thematically differently oriented festival programs, which were consecutively dedicated to the areas of politics (2006), religion (2007), sport (2008) and eroticism (2009). In the festival programs, each comprising 20 to 30 events, the thematic areas were taken up and processed in various ways. In the case of the first festival (2006), this was done through a survey of the current relationship between music and politics on both an artistic and a discursive level.

“The central question posed by the festival organizers was not whether there is any reciprocal relationship between music and politics, but how this is shaped in the present. In order to do justice to the complexity of the question, people in Leipzig relied on a deliberately undogmatic and open-ended discussion and often let the music speak for itself. The risk of just circling the question without answering it was accepted [...] "

- Nico Thom

Another example of the holistic curatorial and dramaturgical approach of the FZML is the festival CAGE100 (2012/13), which was dedicated to the American composer and artist John Cage. In this project, the FZML transferred the artistic concept directly to the festival format and its content. 125 composers alone worked on the composition of a single piece, the “Party Pieces”, based on an idea by John Cage. Measured by the number of composers involved, the resulting work represents the largest collective composition in Western music history.

Another special feature of the project was its global scope. All composers involved lived and worked in Germany or the USA during the project period. Still, the majority of them come from around a dozen other countries, including Canada, France, Poland, Russia, and Japan. As a result, not only an aesthetic, but also a cultural multi-perspective was created as the basis of the collective composition.

In its projects, the FZML mostly works with other institutions, independent groups, but also companies, clubs and associations. In addition, depending on the type of project, the association engages musicians and ensembles, but also other artists and scientists from Germany and other countries. The FZML does not occupy a special room, but selects its venues according to artistic and curatorial-dramaturgical aspects. In the course of its existence, the club can refer to over 200 different venues.
