Axel Schmidt (musician)

Axel Schmidt (born August 19, 1940 in Zwickau ) is a German English horn player and oboist .

Life

Schmidt learned to play the oboe with Alfred Gleißberg , the principal oboist of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and with Peter Fischer at the Leipzig University of Music .

From 1962 to 1964 he worked with the Schwerin Symphony Orchestra . In 1964 he became principal cor anglais with the Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra under Herbert Kegel . He was an interpreter of early music in the Pro Arte Antiqua Lipsienis , the Telemann Ensemble and the Capella Fidicinia under the musicologist Hans Grüß . In 1970 he became a member of the Neue Musik Hanns Eisler group and the Leipzig Consort , which were dedicated to new music . In 1992 he founded the trio PianOvo .

He has been teaching cor anglais and oboe since 1976; In 1993 he became a professor at the Liszt School of Music Weimar . Here he acted as dean and prorector . Michael Goldammer , Walter Klingner , Sebastian Röthig and Gunter Sieberth are among his students . He is also a visiting professor in the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, Finland and the UK.

Axel Schmidt lives in the Mölkau district of Leipzig .
