Foxhill is a small settlement in the Tasman District on the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The place name was given by an English settler who named the place after his family's farm in England.
geography
The settlement around 8 km southwest of Wakefield on the left bank of the Wai-iti River . The New Zealand State Highway 6 , which divides the place into two parts, connects it with Nelson, which is around 33 km northeast . Foxhill , lying on both sides of State Highway 6 , goes in its continuation in the northeast in Wai-iti in the southwest and Belgrove .
history
Foxhill received a rail connection to Nelson through the first section of the Nelson Section, which was opened in 1876 . After several extensions to the Gowan Bridge , the line was finally closed on September 3, 1955 and then dismantled.
The place is known for the fact that nuclear physicist Ernest Rutherford, who was born in neighboring Brightwater , grew up in Foxhill and attended the local elementary school. His former school is dedicated to his memory as " Rutherford Memorial Hall ".
