The Franconian Wine Festival Volkach (also Volkacher Wine Festival ) is the largest wine festival in the Franconian wine-growing region . It takes place annually on the second weekend in August in the Lower Franconian town of Volkach and attracts 50,000 to 60,000 visitors on the four days of the event.

history

Festivals with the theme of wine have been known on the Mainschleife since the beginning of the 20th century. Nevertheless, such festivals were not part of the traditional winegrowing customs around Volkach. It was not until the establishment of the Beautification Association, now the Tourist Association , in 1893 that wine festivals were introduced in the region. The first wine festival in Volkach is recorded in 1904, and a winegrower's song was written for the festival.

A total of over 120 wines will be served at the wine festival

After the Second World War , the city and the tourist office wanted to follow up on these first festivals. To this end, the head of the choir, Hermann Buschmann, organized the first Franconian wine festival in 1949. After the previous wine festivals had been held on the town's market square , the festival was relocated to Hindenburgpark, which had been dug in the disbanded trenches of the town wall in 1910.

In the run-up to the event, several mayors of large national and international cities wanted to send delegations to the small Franconian town. Munich's mayor Thomas Wimmer planned to send a Schuhplattler group and a brass corps to Volkach. Pierre de Gaulle, Lord Mayor of Paris , expected from the festival, “(...) that a Franco-German understanding will be brought about.” The city leaders of London , West Berlin , Hamburg and Cologne also reported by letter. All delegations had to be rejected because no overnight accommodation was available.

The first Franconian wine festival was opened on August 27, 1949 with a large parade . The festival winemakers and many traditional costume groups took part. The wine festival lasted until August 29th, which is much shorter than it is today. The second wine festival in 1950 lasted from August 19 to 21. In a storm in 1971, two people died and 27 were injured on the Weinfestplatz. A pageant was organized for the last time in 1973, since then the festival has concentrated on the festival grounds in Hindenburgpark. Parades were only held again for the sixtieth and seventieth wine festivals in 2018.

Today the Franconian Wine Festival Volkach is the largest wine festival in the Franconian wine-growing region in terms of area, scope and number of visitors. Over 60,000 visitors came to the festival in 2015, 10,000 people saw the entry of the wine princesses on the first day. The organization of the festival is still in the hands of the city. Every year there is a five- to six-digit deficit. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the 72nd Franconian Wine Festival was canceled in 2020.

procedure

The wine festival takes place from the second Friday in August until the following Monday. In some years the festival also includes Assumption Day , which is a public holiday in mostly Catholic parishes in Bavaria. In addition, the so-called wine festival addition will be celebrated on Tuesday without admission fee.

With the entry of the wine sovereignty onto the festival area, the wine festival will open on Friday. This festival entry will be repeated on Saturday, now the festival winemakers will accompany the train. The so-called councilor fireworks also take place on Friday evening. The name comes from the symbolic figure of the Volkach vineyard councilor . A Volkach citizen embodies the councilor in historical garb and has a few appearances and speeches during the festive season.

Monday is usually the so-called children's and family afternoon. In addition to vouchers , the children receive discounted entry to the amusement park next to the fairground. The highlight of the wine festival on Monday evening is the so-called sparkler magic, in which visitors hold up previously distributed sparklers . Mostly pop and rock bands play on Tuesday.

Festival winemakers

Several wineries , which are also well-known nationwide, serve their products at the wine festival. The majority of these are companies that are based in the city of Volkach itself. However, goods from the districts and the administrative community are also represented. In 2018, eleven wineries were gathered at the wine festival. A few local winegrowers' cooperatives represent the smaller winegrowers.
