Frédéric Boilet (born January 16, 1960 in Épinal , Département Vosges in Lorraine ) is a French comic book writer and illustrator who has lived and worked in Japan for a long time, where he acquired citizenship.

life and work

Boilet attended the art academy ( École nationale supérieure d'art ) in Nancy from 1978 to 1983. In the same year his first comic book was published, La Nuit des Archées , which was written by Guy Deffeyes . This was followed by a historical story in two volumes, Les Veines de l'Occident , which was written by René Durand .

In 1987 the first album he wrote and drawn, le Rayon vert, was released . Boilet was unlucky that the publisher went bankrupt shortly after the critically acclaimed volume appeared. It appeared again in 2009. In 1990 Boilet was able to travel to Japan thanks to the support of Shoei and the Center national du Livre . The Love Hotel (1993), created in collaboration with Benoît Peeters , tells the strange and comical experiences of a Frenchman in Japan. The book is bilingual French and Japanese throughout. The following year he was a scholarship holder from April to September at the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto , a novelty for a comic artist. In 1995 he founded the Atelier des Vosges in Paris together with Christophe Blain , David B. , Émile Bravo , Joann Sfar , Emmanuel Guibert and Tronchet .

Boilet returned to Japan in 1997 with the aim of staying there and establishing himself as a comic book writer. A Japanese edition of Tōkyō est mon jardin was created and works that are only intended for the Japanese market, Une belle manga d'amour and a number of illustrated books under the ironic title Prisonnier des Japonaises (modern Lettres persanes ).

Boilet is an intermediary for Japanese authors in France, such as Jirō Taniguchi . He initiated the multicultural attempt La Nouvelle Manga , whose title alludes to the Nouvelle Vague of French cinema. He also edited a number of author mangas from 2004 to 2008 , Sakka at Casterman and also the joint project Japon , which appeared in Casterman's series Écritures in 2005 . The employees of the book were Moyoko Anno , Aurélia Aurita , Frédéric Boilet, Nicolas de Crécy , Etienne Davodeau , Little Fish , Emmanuel Guibert , Kazuichi Hanawa , Daisuke Igarashi , Taiyō Matsumoto , Fabrice Neaud , Benoît Peeters, David Prudhomme , François Schuiten , Joann Sfar and Kan Takahama .

Boilet has created a complex work. His drawing style has changed over the course of his career. A virtuoso draftsman from the beginning, he gradually integrated photography into his work.
