Frédérick Leboyer (born November 1, 1918 in Paris - † May 25, 2017 ) was a French gynecologist and obstetrician .

Career

Leboyer worked for a long time as a gynecologist and obstetrician in a Paris clinic. He is the father of the gentle birth , also known as the Leboyer method . In his book Birth Without Violence , published in 1974 , Leboyer focused on the newborn and demanded that it should be brought into the world gently, lovingly and without unnecessary stress. From the security of the womb, the newborn should be allowed to slowly get used to the physical change. This includes the following measures:

  • The newborn baby should be placed on the mother's stomach to feel the warmth and hear the mother's heartbeat. This is how the baby should recover from the hardships of childbirth.
  • The umbilical cord is not cut immediately after birth. This should make it easier for the child to switch to independent breathing.
  • The child and mother are given time to get to know each other first. Then the newborn is given a warm bath and then placed on the chest for the first time.
  • The child should be handled gently unless special medical measures are required.
  • The delivery room should be particularly warm and the light should be subdued so that the child can get used to the transition.

Leboyer also brought the Indian baby massage (Kumara Abhyanga) rooted in Ayurveda to the West, which is why it is often called Leboyer massage here .

He last lived as a writer in Switzerland , where he died in May 2017 at the age of 98.

Leboyer's books are also widely used to prepare for birth . The gentle, non-medicalized style of childbirth that he propagated has developed into a model, especially in Germany and not in France.
