François de La Baume († 1587 in Montélimar ) was a French nobleman, military man and governor . He was Seigneur de Suze , who was raised to the county of Suze for him.

Life

François de La Baume was the son of Guillaume de La Baume de Suze, Seigneur de Suze, and Catherine Alleman d'Alabaron. He was a member of the King's Conseil Privé , captain of a royal orderly of 50 armed men, Amiral des Mers du Levant. His military activities were directed primarily against the Huguenots , whom he defeated at the Battle of Cederon (now Séderon , Dauphiné) and the Battle of Saint-Gilles (Languedoc, September 1562), as well as the Huguenot leader François de Beaumont , Baron des Adrets, and Charles du Puy-Montbrun , Seigneur de Montbrun .

In December 1572 the Seigneurie Suze was raised to the county of Suze. From June 3, 1578 to 1579 he was royal governor of Provence and in personal union governor of Avignon and Comtat Venaissin , subordinate to the Pope ; he did not exercise the office, however, as he was not recognized by the Provençals. He signed his will on May 20, 1580. On December 21, 1581 he received membership in the Order of the Holy Spirit , on December 31, he was formally admitted.

François de La Baume, Comte de Suze, died in 1587 of wounds he sustained while defending Montélimar against the Huguenots.
