Francesco Alidosi (* around 1455 in Castel del Rio near Imola , † May 24, 1511 in Ravenna ) was a cardinal of the Catholic Church . He belonged to the Roman Curia and was also Bishop of Pavia .

Life

After studying theology in Bologna , he came to the court of Sixtus IV , who appointed him scriptor apostolicus . He became friends with Giuliano della Rovere , the Pope's nephew. During this after the election of his old rival Alexander VI. Had to leave Rome, Alidosi stayed at the court of the new Pope, who tried to get him to be Della Rovere's murderer. Alidosi warned his friend and joined him in exile in France. After his return in 1503 and the election of Della Roveres as Pope Julius II , he appointed Alidosi secret chamberlain and then apostolic protonotary . At the beginning of 1504 he was appointed papal chamberlain. On March 7, 1504 Alidosi became Bishop of Mileto , but followed Ascanio Sforza on May 30, 1505 on the bishopric of Pavia. During his second consistory , Julius II elevated him to the cardinalate with the titular church of Santi Nereo ed Achilleo , despite considerable resistance from the college of cardinals in the consistory of December 1505 , later he transferred the titular church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere to him .

Alidosi was one of the Pope's closest advisers. His substantial income enabled him to support artists and writers, including Michelangelo and Bramante , whom he had a design made for the family palace in Castel del Rio. Erasmus was his guest on the trip to Italy in 1507. From 1507 to 1511 Alidosi officiated as Bishop of León .

In 1508 the Pope appointed him a legate in Bologna, where he fought the anti-papal movement with tough measures. At the same time, he made preparations for the war against Venice, which broke out in 1509. The Pope called him several times to Rome for consultations. The complaints against the government in Bologna, which Alberto Albergati had brought the city to the Pope, were rejected by Julius II. In October 1510, Alidosi was appointed bishop of Bologna, but because of the hostility of the papal general Francesco Maria della Rovere, he was released from the position of legate in the campaign against the French. As the fighting armies approached the area of Bologna, Alidosi left the city after the citizens refused to let the mercenaries he had recruited into the city. The Duke of Urbino suffered heavy losses off Bologna. The Duke and Cardinal turned to Ravenna , where Julius II resided. Since the Pope accepted the cardinal's apologies, but not those of the duke, Della Rovere murdered the cardinal on May 24, 1511 on the street in Ravenna.

A portrait of the cardinal ascribed to Raphael is in the Prado in Madrid .
