Francesco Valdambrini (born April 24, 1933 in Turin , † February 4, 2007 in Trento ) was an Italian composer and music teacher .

Life

Valdambrini was a student of the twelve-tone composer Luigi Dallapiccola . From 1960 he studied in Vienna with Hans Swarowsky and at the same time took part in Hanns Jelinek's twelve-tone seminars . He also got to know Bruno Maderna , with whom he was soon connected by both a friendship and close professional collaboration. With the German pianist Werner Seiss he performed works by contemporary composers as a piano duo.

From 1963 to 1968 he taught stylistics for contemporary music at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts Vienna , then composition at the Conservatory of Bolzano and later directed the Conservatories of Trieste and Venice. Valdambrini composed chamber music and symphonic works, vocal music and stage works, including the opera Pentheus , with which Ralf Weikert opened the performance season at the Bonn Opera in 1971 .

Valdambrini founded a new compositional technique, which he called musica tricordale and which is based on triads made up of tones separated by a whole tone. He first applied this technique in Sonanza Infinita, Ritrovato tricordale for piano in a single sound of around 50 minutes in 1990. The method was adopted by students such as Franz Bazzani , Antonio Gasperi , Daniel Oberegger , Alessio Silvestrin and Marco Varner .
