Francesco de Angelis (sailor)

Francesco de Angelis (born September 11, 1960 in Naples ) is an Italian sailor . He was the first Italian skipper to win the Louis Vuitton Cup , the qualifying event for the America's Cup 1999/2000 with the yacht  Luna Rossa (ITA 45) for the Prada Challenge yacht syndicate .

Francesco de Angelis was five times world champion in different boat classes:

In addition, he won the Admiral's Cup in 1995 , which is considered the unofficial world championship in ocean sailing. In Porto Cervo , Sardinia , they won the Sardinia Cup and twice in the Swan World Cup. Two European and nine Italian titles in different classes complete his list of victories. The Italian National Olympic Committee (Coni) awarded Francesco de Angelis three medals.

After his victory in the Louis Vuitton Cup, Francesco de Angelis led Team Luna Rossa-Prada to the America's Cup final in 2000, where he was beaten 5-0 by Team New Zealand ( Skipper : Russell Coutts ).

In 2003 he stood for Luna Rossa in the semi-finals of the America's Cup and lost to Team OneWorld 2: 3 in this 31st Cup . In the final of the Louis Vuitton Cup and the semifinals of the 32nd America's Cup in 2007, he defeated the BMW Oracle Racing team 5-1 under skipper Chris Dickson . In the final, de Angelis lost again to the New Zealand team from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron with 0: 5.
