Francis Godolphin D'Arcy D'Arcy-Osborne, 7th Duke of Leeds (* May 21, 1798 - May 12, 1859 ) was a British aristocrat ( peer ) during the reign of George III. , Georg IV. And Wilhelm IV.

Life

Francis Osborne was the first son of George Osborne, 6th Duke of Leeds , (1775-1838) and Lady Charlotte Townshend (1776-1856), a daughter of George Townshend, 1st Marquess Townshend . Osborne had a sister, Charlotte Mary Anne Georgiana (1806–1836), and a younger brother, George Thomas William (1812–1831).

Osborne, who initially held the courtesy title of Marquess of Carmarthen , served briefly in the British Army . From 1820 to 1830 he was Marquess of Carmarthen Member of Parliament for the constituency of Helston in the county of Cornwall . In 1828 he married Louisa Catherine Caton, daughter of Richard Caton, an American merchant from Baltimore , Maryland .

In June 1838 Osborne was appointed to the House of Lords by a special royal resolution ( Writ of Acceleration ) and was given the paternal title of Baron Osborne prematurely . In July 1838 the 6th Duke of Leeds died, whereupon Francis Osborne inherited all other titles from his father, including Duke of Leeds , Baron Darcy de Knayth and Baron Conyers . In 1846 he was named Colonel-in-Chief of the North York Militia. Politically he was close to the Whigs , but without taking an active part in state affairs. In 1849 he was allowed on the basis of a Royal License to prefix his surname with D'Arcy .

Francis D'Arcy-Osborne died of diphtheria in 1859 at the age of 60 at the Clarendon Hotel in London . Since Osborne had no male offspring, his titles fell to different heirs. As Duke of Leeds , he was followed by his cousin George Godolphin Osborne , son of Francis Godolphin Osborne, 1st Baron Godolphin , his father's younger brother. The titles Baron Darcy de Knayth and Baron Conyers inherited from his nephew Sackville Lane-Fox .
