Sub-lieutenant ( Alferes ) Francisco Duarte da Silva (* December 8, 1862 , † July 17, 1899 in Atabae , Bobonaro community , Portuguese Timor ), nicknamed "O Arbiru" ( German  The Invincible ), was a figure in Portuguese colonial history . He served as a Portuguese colonial soldier.

Since Duarte's arrival in Portuguese Timor in 1893, he has earned a reputation as a charismatic, courageous, and violent commander. Military records later refer to Duarte as " Lawrence of Timor". He led thousands of native warriors in at least five campaigns for the Portuguese colonial power. Duarte became known through the Macau press when she reported on the Maubara revolt in 1893. According to recent research, Duarte is said to have instigated the rebellion himself. He was removed from office, but later served again in campaigns during the Manufahi War . On October 7, 1895, he was wounded at the border near Balibo , but fought again in July 1896 in Cotubaba and in 1897 in Lamaquitos . The Kemak believed that only a golden bullet could kill Duarte, but on July 17, he was shot dead in a skirmish near the Pedras de Bicari (Bicari Rocks) in Atabae when colonial troops were besieging the local village. Duarte was buried in the Santa Cruz cemetery by Dili .

On July 17, 1959, a memorial stone was erected at the place of Duarte's death. He became a legend among the Timorese as well as in Portugal. On the day of his death, there was an annual commemorative event in the colony.
