His first important painting was The Rape of the Sabine Women , which Johanna the Mad followed in 1878 accompanied by the coffin of her husband Philip the Fair , for which he received a medal of honor at the Paris World Exhibition of 1878. On behalf of the City Council of Saragossa , he carried out the counterparts Don Alfonso, the warrior and Don Alfonso, the scholar ; but he surpassed these works by a richly figured representation of the handover of Granada to Ferdinand and Isabella ( La rendición de Granada ) (1882), which is characterized as much by the delicacy of the characteristics as by the liveliness of the description and the grandeur of the style, and which on the Munich exhibition in 1883 brought in the first medal. King Alfonso XII awarded him the Grand Cross of the Order Isabel la Católica for the picture . In addition to these large compositions, Pradilla also executed small genre pictures from modern folk life in the witty, sketchy style of Marià Fortuny .

In 1894 he was accepted as a foreign member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts and in 1897 was awarded the order Pour le Mérite for sciences and arts .
