biography

From monarchy to republic

Don Francisco de Paula, a cousin of King Alfonso XIII. of Spain , married Dona Enriqueta de Borbón y Parade, 4th Duchess of Seville on August 21, 1907. After the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic , he faced it with open hostility. He was one of the few officers who took part in the Sanjurjada , the failed coup d'état of August 10 under the leadership of General José Sanjurjo , and then went into exile with the other members of the royal family.

Spanish Civil War and the Franco era

Military districts of Spain until 1984

After the coup d'état in July 1936, he returned to Spain and joined the Franco army as colonel of the infantry and commander of the 7th motorized infantry regiment "Pavía" and as military commander of Gibraltar . On January 17, 1937, he began an offensive against the Republican militias. The republican militias were surprised by the offensive and were poorly armed anyway; so Don Francisco de Paula fought his way to Marbella. On February 8, 1937, the Duke of Seville took Malaga , despite considerable opposition . On May 14, 1938 he was promoted to Brigadier General and subsequently Commander in Chief of the Cordoba Armed Forces. On August 29, 1939, the Duke was appointed commander of the 11th Division and, some time later, Captain General of the VII Military District based in Valladolid . In 1943 he was accused of trafficking in food and was discharged from the army . Historian Paul Preston writes that the real reasons for this "punishment" were not due to the corruption allegations , but rather to his pro-monarchist behavior.

Grand Master of the Order of Lazarus

Francisco de Borbón y de La Torre, Duke of Seville, was appointed Governor General of the Order in 1930 and elected Grand Master five years later. Thus, after the vacancy of the office of Grand Master from 1910 to 1930, the order returned to the traditional structures.
