At the age of 22 he assisted his uncle Lúcio Costa in Brazil, who was involved in building the new capital Brasília . During this time he became interested in painting and just a few years later he had his first art exhibitions in the USA. From 1965 he worked with fashion designers such as Christian Dior , Pino Lancetti and Valentino , for whom he created textile designs. A short time later he worked as a costume designer for Federico Fellini in Rome and for Stanley Kubrick in the USA for the film A Clockwork Orange .

From the mid-1970s onwards, numerous exhibitions followed in South America and Europe, especially in Sweden, where the Light of Sweden Foundation was founded in 1978 , which campaigns for starving children all over the world and for Franco Costa up to 10 % of his income donated and also motivated other people to donate.

In 1980 he was the official artist of the America's Cup , which paved his way as a painter for other sporting events. In 1988 he made a detour to Kiel , where he was represented as the official artist of the Baltic Match Race and received positive reviews for his pictures. This led to a long friendship with the Schleswig-Holstein state capital.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Holocaust and the memorial concert of Gilbert Levine in Rome, Costa created the painting Never more Holocaust in 1994 , which he presented to Pope John Paul II as a gift. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Kiel Canal , he created several paintings in 1995 that were exhibited throughout Northern Europe, including in the Villa Harvey Dräger in Hamburg.

Franco Costa has also invested both time and money in supporting young artists. In 1997 he founded his dedicated Usedom Feeling Foundation .

Much of his work can now be seen as a permanent exhibition in the city museum in Scheveningen, the Netherlands .
