Frank Augustus Taylor

Frank Augustus Taylor also in the spelling variant Frank A. Taylor (born March 25, 1903 in Washington, DC , † June 14, 2007 ibid) was an American museum director.

Life

Family and education

The Catholic baptized, was born in Washington Frank Augustus Taylor, son of drugstore owner Augustus Taylor and his wife Josephine, born tubs, came after high-school graduation in 1922 as a laboratory apprentice at the Division of Mechanical Technology, a division of the United States National Museum, one. He also took an engineering degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , 1928, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a degree in Law at the Georgetown University , which he 1934 with the graduation to Bachelor of Law ended.

Frank Augustus Taylor married Virginia McCaig (1910–1969) on August 28, 1937. The daughter Joan Josephine came from this connection. Taylor died in mid-June 2007 at the old age of 104 in his native Washington DC. His final resting place was next to his wife in Arlington National Cemetery .

Professional career

Frank Augustus Taylor, who has worked for the Smithsonian Institution since 1922 , was appointed curator of the Division of Engineering in 1932 , and in 1948 he moved to the position of chief curator of the Department of Arts and Industries. In 1955 he took over the position of Assistant Director of the United States National Museum. In 1958, Taylor was appointed first director of the Museum of History and Technology, now the National Museum of American History , which opened in 1964. In 1962 Taylor was appointed director of the United States National Museum, which he held until 1967. The following year he was appointed Director General of Museums, and in 1971 he retired. He also chaired the Exhibits Modernization Program in the 1950s and 1960s.

In addition, Frank Augustus Taylor served as trustee of the Electrical Historical Foundation and from 1936 to 1937 as associate director of the American Merchant Marine survey War Production Board. During the Second World War he served in the US Army with the rank of captain in the Philippines . After his departure, he was promoted to major .

Taylor, who received the National Civil Service League Award in 1963, stood out in particular with publications relating to his field.

Memberships

He was a member of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia, Sigma Tau and the International Council of Museums , and in 1962 he chaired the International Committee for Museums and Collections of Science and Technology (CIMUSET).
