Frank Emmrich

Frank Emmrich (born July 28, 1949 in Niemegk ) is a German immunologist. As professor for clinical immunology at the University of Leipzig , he was also head of the Leipzig Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology (IZI) as well as director of the Translational Center for Regenerative Medicine Leipzig (TRM) and general secretary of the Association for Clinical Research Centers in Germany (ACRC). From April 2008 to April 2016 Emmrich was a member of the German Ethics Council .

Life

Frank Emmrich was born in 1949 in Niemegk (Bitterfeld district) as the son of the physician Rolf Emmrich and his mother Edith. He grew up in Magdeburg and Leipzig. His studies in human medicine were followed by graduation as a Dipl.-Med., Doctorate and years as an assistant doctor at the Medical Clinic of the University of Leipzig, after which he worked as a department head at the State Institute for Immune Preparations and Nutrient Media in Berlin.

After 13 months of political imprisonment in the GDR, he and his wife were ransomed by the Federal Government in 1980 and moved to the Federal Republic of Germany. There he became a research assistant at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg and in 1981 laboratory manager at the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology in Freiburg / Breisgau. He was trained by the University of Freiburg / Br. 1985 habilitated in immunology and in 1986 was professor at the University of Erlangen . From 1987 to 1994 he was head of the clinical working group Immunology / Rheumatology of the Max Planck Society in Erlangen.

Frank Emmrich returned to Leipzig University in 1994 when he was appointed Professor of Immunology . There he became director of the Institute for Clinical Immunology and Transfusion Medicine. He founded the Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research (IZKF) and was its spokesman from 1997–2005. In 2006 he became director of the Translational Center for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Leipzig (TRM). In 2005, the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology (IZI) was founded in Leipzig , and he was its director until the end of 2017. He was deputy chairman of the Life Science Association (VSL) of the Fraunhofer Society. From 2008 to 2016 he was a member of the German Ethics Council, where he deals with questions of biotechnological research and regenerative medicine.

Research priorities

In addition to autoimmunity research, Emmrich is primarily dedicated to immune and cell therapy , stem cell research, therapy development and clinical trials.
