Frank Heller , actually Martin Gunnar Serner, (* July 20, 1886 in Lösen Blekinge , † October 14, 1947 in Malmö ) was a Swedish writer who is considered the first successful crime writer in his country.

Life

Heller attended high school in Lund and then studied English philology at Lund University . In 1910 he received his doctorate on Algernon Swinburne . After several attempts at fraud, he was wanted as a criminal and fled his homeland. In doing so, he acquired the pseudonym Frank Heller, among others. After losing the ill-gotten money gambling in Monte Carlo , he began making a living as a writer. In 1914 the short story collection Mr. Collins Adventure ( Mr. Collins affair i London ) appeared. The title hero Filip Collin is partly autobiographical: Mr. Collin flees to London because of bank fraud and works there as a successful trickster. More stories about Filip Collin follow. Another character from the series is the Jewish psychoanalyst and hobby detective Dr. Joseph Zimmer door, who solves criminal cases in Amsterdam.

In 1919, Heller was able to pay his debts and was therefore able to regain impunity. In the following year he married the Danish nurse Annie Krag and lived with her in various places, including a. in Menton and Bornholm .

Heller's works were filmed in the silent film era, namely in 1924 The Finances of the Grand Duke by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau , again as a musical under the direction of Gustaf Gründgens in 1934, and in 1926 Mr. Filip Collins Adventure under the direction of Johannes Guter .

On October 14, 1947, Heller succumbed to the effects of kidney disease in a hospital in Malmö.
