Life

He was born the youngest son of railroad investor Jay Gould (1836-1892) and his wife Helen Day Miller (1838-1889). He married Helen Margaret Kelly in 1901 and had two daughters with her: Helen Gould and Dorothy Gould (1904–1969). The divorce took place in 1908. Gould's 2nd wife was the actress Edith Kelly, whom he married in 1910. In 1923 the writer Florenz La Caze (1895–1983) became Gould's third wife.

In 1892 he inherited a sixth of his father's fortune. In 1909 he founded the Virginia Railway and Power Company, which was renamed Virginia Electric and Power Company (VEPCO) in 1925 and then Virginia Power in the 1980s . Today, under the name Dominion, it supplies the states of Virginia and North Carolina with electricity and provides natural gas for half a dozen other states.

France

Frank Gould came to France with the aim of building hotels and casinos. In contrast to other investors, he did not build outside, but within cities, which he upgraded as vacation spots. Around 1910 he opened up a huge area around his racing stable in the town of Maisons-Laffitte and invested in the development of equestrian sport.

He wanted to turn the city of Granville into the "Monaco of the North" and built a casino in 1911 and the Hotel Palace le Normandy in 1912 . Gould eventually moved to Juan-les-Pins , where he bought the villa "La Vigie". He had a pine forest planted opposite his property and built the famous Hotel Le Provençal in 1926 . This luxury hotel with its 290 rooms was one of the most important hotel palaces on the Côte d'Azur. His wife Florence Gould received there many celebrities of the time such as André Gide , Roger Martin du Gard , Jean Paulhan , Jean Cocteau , Charles Chaplin and Estée Lauder . Built in the Art Deco style , Le Provencal was one of the most elegant hotels in Europe.

Gould also built Juan-les-Pins' first summer casino. He opened his spa facilities in spring, while in the 19th century there was still mainly a winter season. Parts of the Jeunesse dorée came from Europe to have fun. It was followed by film stars such as Mary Pickford , Mistinguett and Maurice Chevalier .

In 1927 he entrusted the construction of the second casino in the spa town of Bagnoles-de-l'Orne to the architect Auguste Bluysen . This building is one of the cornerstones of the health resort, the Art Deco facade is reflected in the lake. On his initiative, the hotel palace "Palais de la Méditerranée" was built in Nice from 1927 to 1929, another masterpiece of Art Deco, which is still run as a hotel today.

Gould's company also included the body manufacturer De Villars, founded in Paris in 1925 .

Frank Jay Gould died on April 1, 1956 in Juan-les-Pins.
