Frank Luther (bassist)

Frank Danny Luther (* 23. February 1944 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American double bassist of the Modern Jazz .

Luther began to play the piano at the age of four; at the age of six he learned to play the violin. At the age of fifteen he switched to the double bass in the school orchestra. He then worked in Chicago with Herbie Hancock , Tommy Ponce (1960–64), Zoot Sims and Al Cohn (1965). From 1967 to 1968 he studied at the Milwaukee Conservatory and played with Manty Ellis and Wes Montgomery . He then worked in Atlanta with Duke Pearson . In 1973 he moved to New York City , where he worked with Chet Baker and from 1974 for several years with both Don Elliott and Gerry Mulligan . From 1975 he also belonged to Jimmy Giuffre's group . Then he played with Lee Konitz , Joe Puma , Phil Woods , Lionel Hampton , Joe Williams , Jimmy Cobb , Mel Tormé , Warren Bernhardt and Ingrid Sertso . He was also involved in dance performances as a composer and soloist. He can be heard on albums by Attila Zoller , Don Friedman , Hod O'Brien and Gerry Mulligan. He toured Germany several times with Zoller in the mid-1970s.
