Frank Sullivan (ice hockey player, 1898)

Francis Gerald "Frank" Sullivan (born July 26, 1898 in Toronto , Ontario ; † January 8, 1989 ibid) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach . At the Olympic Winter Games in 1928 , he won the gold medal as a member of the Canadian national team.

Career

Frank Sullivan began his career as a hockey player on the University of Toronto team , with which he won the Allan Cup , the Canadian amateur championship, in 1921 . In 1928 he represented Canada at the Winter Olympics with the Toronto Varsity Grads, who had also won the Allan Cup a year earlier. Although he had not previously belonged to the squad, his brother Joe helped him get a place on the team against the will of coach Conn Smythe . In the 1930s, Frank Sullivan himself was the head coach of the Toronto Varsitiy Grads.

International

For Canada , Sullivan took part in the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz , where he and his team won the gold medal. He himself scored two goals in three games during the tournament. At the ice hockey world championship in 1953 he was the coach of Switzerland , which won the bronze medal.

His brother Joe Sullivan was also Olympic champion in ice hockey in 1928. His son Peter Sullivan was also a hockey player and played 126 games in the National Hockey League .
