Frank Wohlfahrt

Frank Barnim Robert Wohlfahrt (born April 15, 1894 in Bremen , † October 3, 1971 in Hamburg ) was a German musician , composer , music teacher and music critic .

Life

Wohlfahrt studied from 1910 composition with Max Loewengard and piano with Conrad Hanns at the Vogt Conservatory in Hamburg and from 1913 with Wilhelm Klatte and Bruno Eisner at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin . In 1916 and 1917 he gave his first piano concertos in Davos , Ragaz and Bern . He studied with Ernst Kurth in Bern , but returned to Berlin in 1920. From 1923 he lived mostly in Florence . From 1929–1943 he was a music critic for the Münchner Neuesten Nachrichten and the Berlin-based Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung . From 1946 he taught music theory at the State School for Music and Theater in Hamburg, where he received a professorship when it was recognized as a state university in 1950 .

Wohlfahrt composed several string quartets , a dramatic cantata and other short works, but is better known for his music-critical publications, including in particular:

  • Anton Bruckner's synphonic work (Leipzig, 1943);
  • Three masters of musical art: Bach - Mozart - Schumann (Hamburg, 1959);
  • History of the Symphony (Hamburg, 1966).

Honor

In 1964 he was honored with the Johannes Brahms Medal from the City of Hamburg.
