Johannes Brahms Medal

The Johannes Brahms Medal of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is a music prize that has been awarded since 1928.

Story and purpose

The medal was donated in 1928 by the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg to honor artists, personalities and / or groups of people for special merits and outstanding achievements in the field of music, especially Brahms care and Hamburg's musical life. The honor is dedicated to the composer Johannes Brahms , who was born in Hamburg in 1833 . The award takes place at irregular intervals by the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg to a different number of people.

The medal

The medal has a diameter of 95 mm and shows the name and a side portrait of Johannes Brahms on the obverse, and the inscriptions "For merits to Hamburg music life" and "Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg" on the reverse.

The design was carried out by the Hamburg sculptor Friedrich Wield .
