Günter Jena
Günter Jena (* 1933 in Leipzig ) is a German choir director , organist and church music director.
Life
Jena attended the Thomasschule in Leipzig , followed by a degree in musicology. He studied psychology and philosophy in Berlin , then conducting and organ at the Musikhochschule in Munich (assistant to Karl Richter ).
Günter Jena was cantor and church music director , initially at the evangelical St. Johanniskirche in Würzburg , where he initiated a Johann Sebastian Bach Society in 1966 . In 1969 he founded the annual Würzburg Bach Days . From 1974 to 1997, as church music director in Hamburg , he conducted regular performances of Bach's works , classical and romantic music at St. Michaelis . Jena founded the Hamburg Bach Days , which became a Mecca for Bach lovers with highly acclaimed performances. In collaboration with the choreographer John Neumeier , he directed several ballet performances at the Hamburg State Opera , including the St. Matthew Passion by Bach and the Requiem by Mozart . Jena wrote musical and theological publications on the St. Matthew Passion and the Christmas Oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach. He is a member of the Free Academy of the Arts Hamburg .
Jena's students included the surgeon and organist Ernst Kern .
Awards
- Culture Prize of the City of Würzburg
- In 1986 the Senate of Hamburg awarded him the honorary title "Professor"
- and in 1987 the highest award for performing musicians, the Johannes Brahms Medal .
- Free Academy of the Arts in Hamburg: plaque for 1998
