Conrad Hansen (born November 24, 1906 in Lippstadt ; † June 22, 2002 in Hamburg ) was a German pianist and important piano teacher.

Life

At the age of eight, Hansen had his first piano lessons in Lippstadt, and two years later he was giving public concerts. He made a name for himself around the world, especially as an interpreter of the works of Ludwig van Beethoven . In 1922 Conrad Hansen went to Berlin as a student of Edwin Fischer , with whom he studied together with Grete Sultan and Ferry Gebhardt , and made his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker under their chief conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler five years later . Further concerts followed with Eugen Jochum , Willem Mengelberg , Herbert von Karajan and even Richard Strauss . The recording of Beethoven's 4th Piano Concerto from 1943 with the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Furtwängler is still an insider tip among connoisseurs.

Conrad Hansen gained worldwide fame as an artist and as a music teacher. His students included Reimar Dahlgrün , Konrad Meister , Renate Kretschmar-Fischer and Vera Schwarz . From 1934 to 1945 he was a lecturer at the City Conservatory of Berlin , in 1946 co-founder of the Detmold Music Academy , where he was a professor until 1960. He founded the Hansen Trio with Erich Röhn (violin) and Arthur Troester (violoncello).

In 1960, Hansen succeeded Eduard Erdmann at the Hamburg University of Music . Students from Germany, Scandinavia, Russia, Japan and the USA came to Hamburg and sought his advice. Later Hansen also taught at the Lübeck University of Music , where he continued to give courses well into old age.

He received the Johannes Brahms Medal of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg, which u. a. and Günter Wand , Yehudi Menuhin , Felicitas Kukuck and the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra received and had the ring of honor of the City of Lippstadt . On May 24, 2004, the city council of Lippstadt decided to name the city of Lippstadt music school after Conrad Hansen. The official renaming took place on November 24, 2004 as part of a ceremony.

Hansen made a number of recordings for Telefunken and the Reichs-Rundfunk-Gesellschaft (RRG) during the war years . In the 1950s, Hansen recorded a number of records, first again for Telefunken (chamber music works by Franz Schubert and Antonín Dvořák ), then for Deutsche Grammophon (sonatas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , played on a fortepiano ) and finally for Ariola - Eurodisc ( Piano Concertos No. 1 & No. 3 by Ludwig van Beethoven ). Recordings of Beethoven's piano works, as well as contemporary works, can also be found in the sound archives of German broadcasters.

Conrad Hansen suggested the fingerings for the Henle edition of Beethoven's piano sonatas .

He was married to the pianist and harpsichordist Eliza Hansen in a first marriage .
