The Bamberg section of the DuÖAV began building the hut in 1913, but the work had to be stopped when the First World War broke out. In 1971 the CAI section in Bolzano acquired the shell. In the 1980s, Erich Kostner financed the completion of the hut and named it after his father Franz Kostner, an important mountaineer and tourism pioneer in the Val Badia .
