The Piz Boè ( German : Boespitze ) is the highest mountain at 3,152 meters and the only three-thousand-meter peak in the Sella group in the Dolomites .

It is known as the “easiest three-thousand-meter peak ” in the Dolomites and can be reached from the mountain station of the cable car to the summit of Sass Pordoi in just over an hour, with some more difficult passages secured with wire ropes. The first ascent of the summit, documented in writing, was achieved in 1864 by the Viennese alpinist Paul Grohmann .

The Rifugio Capanna Piz Fassa has been on the summit since 1969 , a small refuge that is managed in summer and offers limited overnight accommodation. In 1974 a telephone reflector , visible from afar, was erected on the summit . Because of its easy accessibility, the outstanding panorama , the managed refuge and despite the serious construction of the summit, the Piz Boè is visited very often.

The Piz Boè also attracts with one of the most difficult of all via ferratas built to date, the Piazzetta via ferrata (Italian Via ferrata Cesare Piazzetta ). The first 150 meters of the via ferrata are extremely strenuous and demanding. This is followed by climbing in degrees I and II . However, this part should not be underestimated, because on the one hand several places are very airy; on the other hand (the most beautiful place) a notch has to be crossed over a suspension bridge. The Piazzetta via ferrata was set up in 1982, and the first 150 meters in altitude are to be rated at the 5th level of difficulty in their original state. The largely vertical part of the rock face is mainly on the south side, so that icing and wetness are not to be feared. In the inclined rock of the free climbing passages, however, snow and remains of ice can cause nasty surprises.

There are other possibilities for ascent from the Gardena Pass and from Corvara via the Franz Kostner Hut . In addition to the two relatively easy normal routes from Sass Pordoi and the Boèhütte, there are also climbing options via the Pisciadù via ferrata (Grödnerjoch, medium), the Lichtenfels via ferrata (Corvara, easy) and the Vallon via ferrata (Corvara, medium). The ascent or descent through the Mittagstal (Val de Mesdì) should only be undertaken by experienced mountaineers in safe weather.

In addition, an extreme mountain run is organized on the Piz Boè every year. The start takes place in the village of Canazei in Val di Fassa .
