The Mezdì ( Ladin Val de Mesdì , Italian Val Mezdì ) is a locally up to 45 ° steep scree - Kar in the north of the Sella -Massivs in South Tyrol ( Italy ). It is seen as a particular challenge by experienced mountain hikers and skiers.

Location, geography and landscape

The midday valley begins at the Boèhütte (2,873 m) below the Piz Boè , the highest point in the Sella group at 3,152 m. It is very steep between the high walls of the peaks of Zwischenkofel, Torre Berger, Sass de Mesdì, Bamberger Spitze, Dent de Mesdì and Pisciadù Tower in the west and Neuner, Zehner, Boè-Seekofel, Pizkofel, Big and Small Mesdì Tower in the east its first 3 km by more than 1,000 m to an altitude of around 1,800 m. The cirque, flanked by the high rock walls, has a gorge-like character in the upper section, in other places it widens into larger scree slopes, on which wide fields of snow lie until early summer.

The Val de Bosli valley coming from Pisciadù flows into the lower part of the Mittagstal on the left.

The last section to its end in Kolfuschg (approx. 1 km) runs through coniferous forest and after a last steep step falls into the meadow bottom of the Val Badia at 1,640 m.

The Mittagsbach ( Rü de Mesdì in Ladin ) flows through the Mittagstal, the upper section of which is dry in summer. In the rainy season it forms a waterfall below the Mesdì towers. In the lower section it joins the Pisciadù stream ( Rü de Pisciadù ) and flows into the Gader near Colfosco .

Sports

The starting point for descents and ski runs through the Mittagstal is the Boèhütte, which can be reached after an easy 1-hour hike from Sass Pordoi (fast cable car from Pordoi Pass ).

The descent was in the boarding area a fixed rope along a gully. At least since 2019, all safety ropes on path no. 651 have been removed and a sign in 3 languages says "Only for experienced and with climbing equipment".

The ski run is unguarded and not signposted and is only recommended by the local tourist association to experienced skiers in very good snow conditions accompanied by a mountain guide.

In individual cases, extreme sports enthusiasts have also undertaken mountain biking through the Mittagstal.

Movie

In addition to the mountains around Cortina d'Ampezzo , the rock towers above the Mittagstal were also the location for the film Cliffhanger - Only the Strong Survive with Sylvester Stallone (1993).
