Franz-Stefan Meissel

Franz-Stefan Meissel (born April 23, 1966 in Graz ) is an Austrian lawyer . He is Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Vienna and chairman of the Institute for Roman Law and Ancient Legal History located there.

Life

Franz-Stefan Meissel grew up in western Styria and graduated from the Academic Gymnasium in Graz in 1984 (after a year abroad at the North Eugene High School) . He studied law at the Universities of Vienna and Paris Panthéon-Assas (Mag. Iur. 1988). In 1993 , Meissel received his doctorate from the University of Vienna under Helmut Koziol . He was awarded the Figdor Prize of the Austrian Academy of Sciences for his dissertation “Management without mandate and imposed enrichment in Austrian law” . In 2000 , Meissel completed his habilitation in the subjects of Roman law and European private law development. The habilitation thesis "Societas - Structure and Type Diversity of the Roman Social Contract", which was written during his time as a university assistant with Peter E. Pieler , was awarded the Premio romanistico internazionale Gérard Boulvert as the world's best monograph on Roman law by a young scientist and was awarded the gold medal of the University of Naples Federico II .

From 1999 to 2003 Meissel worked as a project manager for the Austrian Commission of Historians on the practice of restitution proceedings in the post-war period. In 2005 he was appointed University Professor of Roman Law, taking into account the development of private law in comparative law, at the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna . Since 2007 Meissel has been director of the University of Vienna's Summer School. For the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna, he worked from 2008 to 2012 as Head of Studies, since 2009 he has been Head of Doctoral Studies, since 2016 also as Vice Dean of the Faculty and spokesman for the Doctoral Academy "Communicating the Law". In October 2018 he also replaced Nikolaus Benke as director of the Institute for Roman Law and Ancient Legal History. In 2001/02 and 2017/18 Meissel was also President of the Vienna Legal History Society.

In 2016, he received the International Award of the University of Vienna for his long-term management of the summer school.

Meissel has taught annually as a visiting professor at the University of Paris Descartes since 2005 , and was also a visiting professor at the universities of Paris Panthéon-Assas (2010), Montpellier (2014), Roma Tor Vergata (2015) and Cologne (2016).

Due to his expertise in the area of ​​Nazi asset deprivation and restitution law , Meissel acted repeatedly as a consultant and expert (including for Marina Mahler and for the IKG Vienna ). Since 2010 he has been a member of the advisory committee for clarifying open provenance issues at the Leopold Museum Private Foundation ("Michalek Commission"). In 2014, together with Clemens Jabloner and Helmut Ofner, he formed the “ Legal Expert Team of the Klimt / Vienna 1900 Foundation”, whose recommendation led to the private restitution of Gertrude Felsövanyi's portrait of Klimt .
