Franz Alexander Pössinger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Alexander Pössinger (born December 16, 1766 in Vienna ; † August 19, 1827 there ) was an Austrian violinist , arranger and composer.

He lived in Vienna and his main occupation was violinist and viola player in the Vienna court music band . He was particularly successful as an arranger of contemporary works. At a time when it was not yet possible, as it is today, to reproduce successful pieces of music and play them back at home at any time, there was an interest in many households in purchasing arrangements of these works that could be played in small groups with existing instruments.

Alexander Pössinger wrote string quartet arrangements of Ludwig van Beethoven's symphonies and other works by contemporary composers.

His own works were mainly chamber music .

  1. Wurzbach gives this date with the source "Handwritten biographical notes in the archive of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde and the Conservatory in Vienna" and thus corrects his earlier statement "around 1776". This more precise date corresponds to the age indication "60" in the death register entry St. Josef ob der Laimgrube, tom VIII, fol. 108 ( Faksmilie ). In contrast, the Vienna History Wiki has indicated December 16, 1767 since 2017.
