Franz Bendel
Franz Bendel (born March 23, 1833 in Schönlinde , Bohemia , † July 3, 1874 in Berlin ) was an Austrian piano virtuoso and composer .
Life
Franz Bendel was the son of an elementary school teacher. After the first artistic instruction from his father, he became a student of Josef Proksch . Through his teacher, who encouraged him a lot, Bendel later came to Franz Liszt in Weimar , where he also met Wendelin Weißheimer .
In 1848 Bendel was hired by Count Otto von Westphal as a private tutor and music teacher. He held this office for 14 years. On the occasion of the Cecilia celebration in Prague in 1855, his teacher Proksch performed a mass by Bendel. In 1862 Bendel settled in Berlin and became a lecturer at the New Academy of Music . He lived and worked there until his death, only interrupted by several small concert tours, such as in Prague in 1863 , which were praised in the press.
As a practicing as well as a creative artist, Bendel pursued the direction of the serious and dignified, and even his numerous art trips, which were accompanied by great success (the last one even took him to America at the Boston Music Festival), did not diminish the ideality of his striving. Of his compositions, including four masses , symphonies and other larger works, the salon- style piano works and numerous songs have found wide distribution.
His grave is in the French cemetery in Berlin.
