Franz Benedikt Wolf

Franz Benedikt Wolf (born September 30, 1825 in Kölleda ( Eckartsberga district ); † February 12, 1904 in Bonn ) was royal Prussian major general and most recently the commander of the 2nd foot artillery brigade.

His parents were the district secretary in Kölleda and owner of Gorsleben (Eckartsberga district) Karl Wolf († March 10, 1857) and his wife Rosette Schubert .

Life

He attended the convent school in Dorndorf and then in Roßleben . After graduating, he joined the 8th Artillery Brigade as a gunner on October 9, 1843. From October 1, 1844 to July 30, 1847 he was posted to the United Artillery and Engineering School . During this time he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich on April 16, 1845 and aggregated as Seconde-Lieutenant on October 5, 1846 . After graduating, he was recruited on September 13, 1847 as an artillery officer with a patent on August 17, 1845. He came to the combined fortress artillery department on February 21, 1851 and was placed a la suite of the regiment. He then returned to the regiment on August 2, 1855, and was promoted to Premier-Lieutenant on October 1, 1856. On May 31, 1859 he was promoted to captain and on January 21, 1861 he was appointed battery chief. During the German-Danish War of 1864 he was in command of the Gammelmarkbatterie at Düppeler Schanzen from April 2nd to 5th, 1864 . During the German War of 1866 he became the leader of his regiment's four-pounder battery. With this he fought at Hühnerwasser , Münchengrätz and Königgrätz . For this he received the Crown Order 3rd Class with Swords on September 20, 1866 .

After the war he received on January 26, 1869, first the character as a major and on May 14, 1869 and the patent as a major. At the same time he was transferred to Artillery Regiment No. 2 and appointed artillery officer from the square in Szczecin . During the Franco-Prussian War he became an artillery officer on November 3, 1879 from the square in the fortress of Metz . But from January 7, 1871 to January 27, 1871, he was in command of the siege artillery at Longwy, where he acquired the Iron Cross 2nd class . On May 16, 1871 he returned to Metz as an artillery officer.

On July 13, 1872, he was transferred to the foot artillery battalion No. 14 as commander. But already on March 12, 1874 posted to Spandau to learn how to operate the technical institute of the artillery. On June 23, 1874 he was then appointed director of the Deutz artillery workshop and a la suite of the foot artillery regiment No. 15. On September 19, 1874 he rose to lieutenant colonel. In 1876 he made a trip to the USA to visit the world exhibition there in Philadelphia and various institutes.

He was given the rank of regimental commander on May 18, 1876 and promoted to colonel on March 22, 1877. In addition, on January 26, 1879, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 3rd class with ribbon . On June 25, 1881, he came to the 2nd foot artillery brigade as commander and was assigned a la suite of the regiment. On September 13, 1882, he retired as major general, and on October 7, 1882, he was put up for disposal with a pension . He died unmarried on February 12, 1904 in Bonn.
