Franz Blumenthal

Franz Leo Blumenthal (born August 1, 1878 in Berlin ; died September 7, 1971 in Ann Arbor ) was a German-American dermatologist and serologist .

Life

Blumenthal received his doctorate in medicine in Strasbourg in 1903 and was a student of Edmund Lesser at the Charité Dermatology Clinic . In 1919 he received his habilitation there under Georg Arndt and in 1922 an associate professor. From 1929 to 1932 he was acting head of the Charité Dermatology Clinic. In addition, from 1930 he was medical director of the skin tuberculosis clinic in Müncheberg .

Because of the persecution as a Jew by the National Socialists (in 1933 the University of Berlin withdrew his license to teach and he was ousted from the board of the German Dermatological Society) he emigrated to the USA in 1934, where he was a research professor in the dermatology department of the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor. From 1937 he headed the Dermatology Clinic at Wayne County General Hospital in Detroit . He later had a private dermatologist practice in Ann Arbor.

He dealt with the serology of syphilis (syphilis), including the clinical use of Wassermann's reaction to detect syphilis, with fungal diseases of the skin ( trichophytia ), skin eczema, radiation therapy of skin diseases, light therapy, skin tuberculosis and work-related dermatoses.

He lost two brothers and a sister in the Holocaust. Blumenthal was married to Margarethe Orenstein and had two sons.
