Franz Caspar (psychologist)

Franz Caspar (born February 11, 1953 ) is a Swiss psychologist . From 2007-2018 he was full professor at the University of Bern and head of the Department of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy , the associated psychotherapeutic outpatient clinic and two further training programs in psychotherapy. 2010–2012 he was Dean of the Faculty of Human Sciences Univ. Bern. He has been retired since 2018. He was and is the editor of various journals and books in the field of clinical psychology and psychotherapy as well as the author of articles and books in the field of clinical psychology and psychiatry.

Life

He was born on February 11, 1953 in Hamburg as the second child of the Swiss ethnologist Franz Caspar and his wife Frauke. From 1959 to 1965 he attended primary school in Zurich and from 1965 to 1971 the Freudenberg grammar school . From 1972 he studied psychology and political science at the University of Hamburg and graduated in June 1977 with a diploma. In 1985, Franz Caspar received his doctorate from the University of Bern , where he received his habilitation ten years later (1995) in psychology.

He has two sons, Cyril (* 1989) and Sylvan (* 1992) and is a second married to the psychologist and psychotherapist Martina Belz.

Professional career

From 1977 to 1979 he worked part-time in research and teaching and taught a.o. a. Psychology in high schools and in nursing. He had lectureships at the University of Hamburg and works for a project of the Lower Saxony Ministry of Culture . From 1979 to 1985 he was an assistant at the Institute for Psychology at the University of Bern. There he participated in the establishment of the chair for clinical psychology and the psychotherapy outpatient department of the institute.

From 1985 to 1999 he was first senior assistant and then lecturer at the same institute. He spent part of this time with research grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation in North America: October 1987 to October 1988 with Walter Kintsch at the Institute of Cognitive Science , University of Colorado Boulder and October 1988 to September 1989 with Jeremy Safran and Zindel Segal at the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry in Toronto . From 1995 to 1996 he represented the Chair of Clinical and Physiological Psychology in Tübingen . From 1996 to 1997 he had a teaching position as a university lecturer at the University of Vienna . From 1997 to 1999 he was a part-time head psychologist at the Kilchberg Sanatorium Psychiatric Clinic in Kilchberg ZH .

From 1999 to 2005 he held the chair in clinical psychology and psychotherapy at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and from 2005 to 2007 the chair in clinical psychology for adults and psychotherapy at the University of Geneva . In September 2007 he was appointed to the full professorship in clinical psychology and psychotherapy at the University of Bern as successor to Klaus Grawe . Since 2013 he has been a research councilor at the Swiss National Science Foundation .

He received therapist certificates in the cantons of Bern, Zurich and Geneva as well as in Baden-Württemberg.

At the end of July 2018 he retired, but may remain. a. active in research and as a research council of the Swiss National Science Foundation .

Franz Caspar is Past President of the International Federation for Psychotherapy (IFP) and the Society of Psychotherapy Research (SPR), he was on the Steering Committee and Chairman of the Research Committee of the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration (SEPI), and a member of the Steering Committee of The Third Interdivisional APA Task Force on Evidence-Based Relationships and Responsiveness.

He was a member of the Research Commission of the University of Bern , the Quality Assurance Committee of the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Psychotherapists and various other commissions. He is on several advisory boards of psychotherapy training institutes, member of the PSyG commission at the Swiss Accreditation Council (AAQ), member of the DAS Sportpsychologie Uni Bern program management.
