Life

Aarland initially worked in his hometown of Leipzig, where he created his own works based on various masters. Later he was the owner of the xylographic institute W. Aarland XI in Kassel, which he used in particular to produce illustrations for the journal Die Gartenlaube .

In the decades between 1860 and 1880, Aarland created, among other things, numerous woodcuts with views of Nuremberg , including typical farmers of the Nuremberg market and a portrait of Hans Sachs .

In addition, Aarland also produced zoological and botanical illustrations with a scientific claim, for example for Alfred Edmund Brehm or Emil Adolf Roßmaessler's work Der Wald. Described to the friends and keepers of the forest .

Aarland also provided woodcuts for works of fiction such as E. Marlitt's Goldelse or lyrical works.

In the year 1898 or 1899, Wilhelm Aarland became a partner in the Xylographic Institute founded in Leipzig in January 1887 by the wood cutter August Müller . The company then traded as Aarland & Müller , but was sold again after a short time to his successor, Otto Pesch .
