The men's decathlon at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich was played on September 7th and 8th, 1972 in the Munich Olympic Stadium. 33 athletes took part. The decathlon table, modified in 1971, was used to determine the number of points.

Olympic champion was Mykola Avilov from the Soviet Union, who set a new world record . The silver medal went to his compatriot Leonid Lytwynenko , while the bronze went to Ryszard Katus from Poland .

For the Federal Republic of Germany - officially Germany - Horst Beyer , Hans-Joachim Perk and Hans-Joachim Walde started . All three athletes could not finish the competition. Beyer and Perk broke it off after the third, Walde after the fourth.
The GDR was represented by Joachim Kirst and Stefan Schreyer . Schreyer finished fifth in the final ranking, Kirst broke off the competition after the sixth discipline.
Heinz Born and Ruedi Mangisch started for Switzerland. Born finished 19th in the final ranking, Mangisch did not compete after the ninth discipline.
The Austrian Sepp Zeilbauer finished the decathlon in ninth place.
Decathletes from Liechtenstein did not take part.

Existing records

World record 8417 points (8310) Bill Toomey ( USA ) United StatesUnited States  Heidelberg , Federal Republic of Germany (now Germany ) May 14, 1967
Olympic record 8193 points (8064) Mexico City , Mexico September 6, 1960

Remarks:

  • The scores result from the decathlon table developed in 1971. The number of points is given in brackets that would have been obtained using the current ranking table from 1985.
  • The 1960 Olympic champion Rafer Johnson had reached 8392 points there. In terms of numbers, this is more than Bill Toomeys o. G. Olympic record. However, these results are not comparable because a different rating system was used in 1960. Using the points table currently valid in 1972, Toomey's result achieved in 1968 is significantly better than that of Rafer Johnson from 1960.

Conducting the competition

The decathlon was carried out according to the same rules as today. The ten disciplines took place over two days. The scoring was based on the points table from 1971.

Bottom line

Date: 7./8. September 1972

The decathlon of Munich was the second day in a two-class society with a vastly superior Olympic champion Mykola Avilov from the USSR, Olympic fourth from 1968 , and the fighting for positions and medals field far behind. That was not what it looked like during the first day. Above all, the double European champions from 1969 and 1971 set the standards from the third exercise, the shot put . After five disciplines at the end of the first day, Kirst was leading with 4363 points, but Awilow was already just behind with his half-time result of 4347 points. Even behind that, the distances to the athletes in the other places were still tight and the outcome was completely open.

That changed with the 110-meter hurdles , the first exercise of the second day. Awilow ran the fastest time on this route, while Kirst fell on the third hurdle and then had to give up the competition injured. The Soviet decathlete now had a lead of more than 200 points, which he expanded to almost 350 points before the last discipline, the 1,500 meter run . Avilov's achievements were so high that even the world record was still within the realm of possibility. For the athletes behind him there were legitimate prospects for the silver or bronze medal up to ninth place.

Mykola Awilow had to run a time of approx. 4:28 minutes and achieved 4: 22.8 minutes. He became Olympic champion and improved Bill Toomey's previous world record by 39 points. Leonid Lytwynenko was able to move up from eighth to second with his 1500 meter best time - 4: 05.9 min. All direct competitors for the top positions started in the same - the third - run. Nobody could do anything to oppose the pace of the Soviet athlete. Stefan Schreyer, GDR, not only lost his lead of more than 200 points on Lytwynenko, but was also overtaken by the Pole Ryszard Katus and the American Jeff Bennett. Katus made up for the missing 67 points and thus secured the bronze medal.

In order to better classify the performance, in addition to the official points according to the rating table from 1971, the number of points converted according to the current rating system from 1985 is also given. According to this table, which is valid today, there would have been only a few deviations: The seventh-placed Steen Smidt-Jensen would have been two ranks further up, while Stefan Schreyer and Freddy Herbrand would each have moved one place down. The ranks eleven / twelve, sixteen / seventeen and 20/21 would be swapped. Otherwise the order would be unchanged. But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
